Reflection of You
A Recording project by Jake Brothers
Music has always been a
major part of Jake Brothers’ life. Growing up in Ohio, he sang in choirs,
took piano lessons and learned the guitar. He headed off to college at
Anderson University in and began studying Music Business with a minor in
Church Music. Soon, the Lord began drawing Jake’s heart toward leading
others in deeper, more authentic worship of God. He began leading worship in
Anderson’s chapel services, at Campus Crusade meetings, and at a monthly
student-led worship service.
A Dream to Record
During his college years, Jake also started composing more original songs.
Often, he felt inspired by a Scripture passage or a truth from the Holy
Spirit. The more original songs he wrote, the more he began dreaming of
someday recording an album of his own. Friends encouraged him to record, and
he wondered if God may be calling him to move to Nashville after graduation
and begin a recording career.
The Call to the Church
As he approached graduation, Jake sought the Lord’s guidance for his next
steps. Should he risk it all and move to Nashville? “My friends helped me
process the options, and in the end I realized that I have a shepherd’s
heart, and that one of God’s gifts to me was a passion for the church,” Jake
said. “I want to unashamedly call the church to a fuller understanding of
worship.” It was at this time that Faith Church was seeking a director of
Contemporary Worship. Through a referral, Jake was introduced to the church.
“I loved this church right away,” Jake said. He was hired in 2003.
Time to Reflect and to Write
As Worship Director, Jake coordinates volunteer musicians and plans worship
services. However, he also finds time to reflect and to write more original
music. He continues to hone the writing process and has composed songs under
deadlines for events such as the Global Impact Conference or the Lighthouse
Project. Jake’s original repertoire began to expand, and he found himself
convicted by the Lord. “These are songs that the Holy Spirit gave to me,” he
said. “Why should I be keeping them to myself? Does God want these songs to
be a blessing to others?” The dream to record an album grew stronger yet.
The Time is Right!
For more than a year, Jake has been actively working on his recording
project.
In God’s providence, Jake met John David Webster, a local Christian
recording artist whose passion was to empower other Christian artists. John
David began working with Jake in the pre-production process and coached him
on song composition, selection, and voice. He also encouraged Jake to record
using professional musicians and a high-quality studio. Through prayer and
godly counsel, Jake decided that this was God’s will. By God’s grace and
provision and the generosity of His people, the total amount of $22,000 was
raised to cover the cost of the project.
